I am really into tradition style tattoos, so I look for artists working in that style. I have almost finished my left arm and I’m itching to start on my right!
The best advice I could give would be to find an artist whose work you really love. Instagram is a great place for discovering new artists and viewing the wealth of talent that’s out there. The artist you choose might not be local but it’s worth traveling to get the tattoo you want.
Sometimes I have an idea of what I would like. A horse shoe or a moon say and the artist will come up with a design. Sometimes I want something more specific. I had memorial tattoo done after my Nana passed away and I wanted certain elements combined in the tattoo. So I asked Olly Streeter at La Familiar in Newquay who has done a few of my tattoos if he would draw something up for me, he did and it’s one of my favourite tattoos.
Some of my tattoos have been done from the artist flash sheets. Only a few of my tattoos have special meanings or story’s, I mostly just love the iconography in the tradition tattoo designs, pierced harts, anchors, roses etc. So if an artist that I like has some pre drawn flash I might choose something from there. I have built up the tattoos on my arm tattoo by tattoo, rather than having a sleeve where the tattoos are all joined up, so sometimes I might have a weird shaped gap that needs to be filled and that will determine what I get in that space.
So be sure about your artist and the design, because once it’s on its on!
